In April 2016 Kinnerley Primary School approached PSG regarding the adaptation of their IT Suite to provide a much larger library provision for the school. The children forming the ‘School Council’ had decided on a woodland theme for the new library and they really wanted a fun feeling throughout the library.
Like many primary schools, the IT suite was almost redundant due to the uptake of using tablet devices over desktop PC’s.
All bar one of the computer benches were removed to fully open the room up and provide a really flexible space. The carpet tiles were replaced with artificial grass to complement the woodland theme but also to provide a more comfortable sitting area, a pathway between the access doors was created using a hard wearing vinyl printed with twigs, leaves and pine cones, just like a real woodland floor.
Library furniture including two private reading dens were sourced from Incube Ltd. Specialist cartoon woodland wallpaper was used to brighten the walls and a bespoke, handmade Oak tree bookcase really finishes the look.
Although, this was a fairly straight forward project, the use of bespoke and handmade materials wasn’t without its challenges, but the transformation from redundant computer room to magical woodland is being well used by the school.
