The school was built in 1993 and while relatively modern, has a design that uses smaller than normal classroom built around a large shared central practical space. Demand on school places has increased over the years and although a classroom extension was built in 2002, by 2021 it was clear that a further classroom was needed to take pressure off the over-crowded teaching spaces.
The design follows the form and style of the existing but is built to reflect the much higher standards of modern day. The extension is well insulated and achieves a very good airtightness value of 3.0m3/(h.m2) at 50Pa. This will reduce draughts and uncontrolled heat loss and should provide a much more energy efficient building.
Construction was carried out by SWG Construction ltd who work extensively in Wales, Cheshire, Shropshire and the West Midlands. Their site team efficiently managed the project, and it was completed ahead of schedule just before Christmas 2022 ready for the start of term in 2023.
