The Column and recumbent lions are carved from local Grinshill stone, whist the statue is carved from Coade stone, a manmade stone, which was a popular choice for neoclassical statues.
The Statue has required numerous phases of repair works, due to the exposure of the statue. Where previous repairs have been undertaken using a traditional lime mortar, these are the commonly failing element. Therefore, we have secured agreement from Historic England to carry out this phase of repairs using natural Roman cement, with the aim to provide further longevity to the repairs.
In addition to the repair of the cracks and and surface fills, due to the extent of deterioration, the left arm will be removed and a cast replacement made.
To facilitate these works it will be necessary to erect a fully independent scaffolding system to the perimeter of the column to provide access and a safe working platform.
Upon completion of the works, the statue will be painted and areas affected by algae and lichen growth will be steam cleaned, including the lions, buttresses and affected paving slabs.
This project is currently out to tender with a view to the works being completed over the summer and early Autumn months.
