Recognising the building’s historical and community value, the council has been working with Cambrian Heritage Railways, contractor Phillips and Curry Ltd, and conservation specialists. Working together a sensitive programme of repairs was developed to secure the building’s long-term future and bring it back into sustainable use.

Key restoration works have included the replacement of damaged corbels and stringers, the safe removal of asbestos slates and replacement with new Ffestiniog Welsh Slate. The repair of sandstone plinths with locally sourced Grinshill stone, and the buildings windows and other architectural details have also been carefully redecorated.

With funding in place, a full Conservation Management Plan (CMP) was developed in 2024, alongside in-depth building surveys. This information will inform a business case and proposed end use, to be presented to the Council’s Cabinet in 2025. Meanwhile, planning for internal refurbishment is already underway, ensuring the building can serve the community once again.

This project marks a significant step in preserving Oswestry’s architectural heritage and breathing new life into one of its most distinguished historic buildings.

Michael Curry (Director Phillips & Curry) quote on social media:

“it’s been a pleasure working with Property Services Group on this project, straight forward decisions on specification with concise project collaboration makes our job so much easier to do”.
