For the third time running, PSG took part in the annual Severn Hospice Dragon Boat Race on Sunday 9th July 2018.   After reaching the final in 2017, expectations were running high and mood in the gazebo was probably not unlike England football team's dressing room, full of advice on technique and motivational talks taking place between races. The weather didn't disappoint either, with temperatures reaching a scorching 30 degrees, we managed to keep our cool.

Our team name was Hold Your Oarses with each member donning horse jockey outfits.  Unfortunately, we didn't win the fancy dress competition again but the team made a great effort with their costumes.

Our first heat went well and we won in a time of 1.17.19 but we knew we could go faster.  We smashed the second race in a time of 1.14.18, giving us the fifth fastest time of the day and earning us a place in the final. The third race was completed in 1.16.74 after clashing oars with our competitors, but it didn't matter because we had done enough to qualify!

The final arrived and we boarded boat number six. In high spirits and fully focused on the job in hand, we were determined to give it our all. The atmosphere was fantastic with 100’s of spectators lining the banks of the River Severn to cheer us all on.

Ready, set, go and we were off, six boats neck and neck, we worked as hard as we could to keep the momentum going to the very end. Despite coming in fourth place, the time difference between 1st and 6th was only 2 seconds.   The video footage can been viewed on Severn Hospice facebook page.  It was an awesome finish for rowers and spectators alike, what a great end, to a great event.

Well done to CrossFit SY1 who won the event.

A big thank you must go to all who sponsored us to allow us to take part in the event. To date we have raised £1,174 for Severn Hospice which will go directly to help them caring for terminally ill patients and their families across Shropshire and Mid Wales.  Severn Hospice and their team of volunteers were fantastic throughout the event and the day went by without a boat capsizing.

Our online donation portal is still open should you wish to donate https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/psg-jockeys
